This SCQF level 6 equivalent course is a nationally recognised qualification which is particularly suited to persons with a certain amount of prior science knowledge, and who are wishing to extend this further in order to take up more advanced level study at HND or BSc (dependent on suitable grades being achieved)

There are different routes of study available on this course, allowing candidates to specialise in their preferred areas. These routes will involve candidates opting to study mainly in either chemistry/physics or chemistry/biology or chemistry/human biology

The course is composed of SQA units, further details of which are shown below. The initial stages of the course will contain units at Intermediate 2 Level. Thereafter the majority of the course will be at Higher level.

This course will contain a particularly large amount of stimulating practical activities and laboratory work. This will give participants a particularly broad base of laboratory expertise, of great value in the job market or for further study at HND or degree level. Much of the practical work undertaken will be of direct relevance to local issues and industries, or to topical events.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Satisfactory completion of Intermediate 2, Credit Standard Grade or National 5 courses in a minimum of two science disciplines along with Maths, or successful completion of the Level 5 NC Applied Science. Where a candidate only has prior qualifications in one science discipline, this may still be satisfactory providing they have particularly strong qualifications in other subjects.

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?

This course is suited to persons with science qualifications at standard grade or equivalent, and who are wishing to extend this further in order to take up more advanced level study at HND or BSc.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

This course is assessed on a continuous basis, and does not include an end of course exam. Each unit will be assessed separately, and for most of the science units this will take the form of a single end of unit test, and assessed practical activities. Performance in Higher Level units will be graded, and this will be used to allow progression to further study.

PROGRESSION ROUTES / CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Students successfully completing this course may progress to HNC or HND Applied Sciences, or to degree level study on a range of university programs (grade dependent).
