The course suits those with an enthusiasm for spoken and written English and who wish to explore English Language in more depth. You are assessed by both controlled assignments and exams.

What’s involved?

Controlled Assessment

This involves completing different tasks including extended reading, creative writing and spoken language. Each section of this unit is assessed through collected evidence, in the form of coursework tasks. All evidence from these units will be completed under controlled assessment conditions – that is completed within class, under timed conditions and with supervision. Speaking and listening

This unit consists of three speaking and listening tasks. The activities will be focused on presenting, discussing and role-playing. This unit will account for 20% of the total GCSE marks.

Exam

This unit is assessed through one external 2 hour 15 minute examination. Section A – Reading, requires you to answer five compulsory questions, based on three short reading resources. In Section B – Writing, you will complete two compulsory writing tasks. The exam is worth 40% of the total GCSE marks.

Entry Requirements:

Grade D at GCSE English Language and an initial assessment.
