What’s involved?

Year 1

Understanding Communication and Culture

What is popular culture? How do we explain everyday life? Why do we become fans of film, fashion or certain types of food? We explore why we go shopping and consume popular culture, at home or the mall. The unit asks you to think about street art and its value, such as the work of graffiti artists like Bansky. We also examine how musical subcultures have been portrayed in film. The unit looks at how appearance, speech and body language fit into examples of popular culture.

The Individual and Contemporary Culture: Portfolio

This is your chance to explore issues such as fast food and where we eat and why, or maybe explore what the ‘stuff’ you own means. What’s the significance of popular culture you like? You can also explore the way you get to college or the ‘reality’ of family life at home. You decide.

Year 2

Take the exploration of popular culture to a new level. Explore the critical theories that explain film, TV or advertising, as well as novels, or where you live. How did the iPad or the iPod become objects of desire? Why do we love digital technology so much? We think about how Capitalism and Marxism help us think about popular culture; decide what feminists are thinking; and how we can explore the crazy world of postmodern design. Why not question the idea of ‘reality’ itself, with a post-structuralist thinker?

Entry Requirements:

A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade A* to C including English.

Which courses go well with this?

Communication and Culture complements Media Studies and Film Studies or Photography. It also fits well with English or Sociology. If you are taking a science, doing Communication and Culture alongside provides an interesting and varied package of courses.

Progression:

A2 students have a good track record of taking higher education courses in communication, cultural studies, media or advertising. The course includes transferable skills of discussion and debate, as well as written and practical skills.
