If you are a clear and logical thinker, are good at maths and would like to know more about the underlying nature of our world, then this course is for you. Assessment is predominantly exam based.
What’s involved?
AS Foundation Chemistry
Atomic structure is considered, together with ideas of chemical bonding. Chemical calculations occupy a large proportion of this unit. The relationship between atomic structure and the position in the periodic table is developed using Period 3 elements. The principles of organic chemistry are introduced.
AS Chemistry in Action
This unit introduces chemical energetics, kinetics and equilibria.
The importance of factors affecting rate and position of equilibrium and the yield of a reaction is studied. Organic chemistry is developed to embrace a range of organic compounds and an introduction to analytical techniques. Redox reactions, the halogens and group 2 elements are studied.
Investigative and Practical Skills in AS and A2 Chemistry
Internal assessment is undertaken throughout the course to assess your ability to follow and undertake certain standard practical activities across the areas of inorganic, organic and physical chemistry. Your analytical and evaluative skills are assessed through a one hour exam paper.
A2 Kinetics, Equilibria and Organic Chemistry
Kinetics and equilibria are both treated quantitatively. Acids, bases, buffer solutions and changes in pH during titrations, classes of organic compounds, their reactions and mechanisms are all studied in depth. Spectroscopic techniques are studied to determine molecular formulae and structure.
A2 Energetics, Redox and Inorganic Chemistry
Energetics is developed to cover entropy and free energy. The study of redox reactions is extended to cover electrode potentials and their applications. The characteristic properties of transition metal complexes are studied including their uses in medicine and in industry as catalysts. The reactions of metal ions in aqueous solution are systematised through an understanding of hydrolysis and substitution reactions of selected aqua ions.
Entry Requirements:
A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades A* to C, with:
2 GCSEs in Science - higher paper - (at least one of these at grade B, the other at grade C or above) or GCSE Chemistry - higher paper - grade C or above
Grade B or above preferred in Maths but we may accept grade C on the higher paper
Grade C or above preferred in English. Grade D accepted but must retake GCSE English Language.
The following are not accepted to study AS Level Chemistry: GCSE Applied Science or Level 2 Vocational Science Qualifications.
Which courses go well with this?
This course combines well with all science subjects and can also be used as a broadening subject alongside non-science subjects e.g. History.
Progression:
Previous students have gone on to degree courses in a range of Chemical and Biological subjects, including Medicine, Veterinary Science, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Chemical Engineering, Materials, Science and Forensic Science.
