Web design is one of the key growth areas in graphic communication. This course is designed to provide you with the skills & awareness necessary for employment in web design & related fields, with a particular emphasis towards the understanding & use of web-based communications.

This course aims to give a theoretical & practical introduction to online development, including the principles of designing for the internet. Students will gain an understanding of the fundamentals of programming languages. Students will also gain practical experience of developing for the internet, in-project negotiation, development, and the final design & publishing of an online application.

This course aims to give a theoretical & practical introduction to online development, including the principles of designing for the internet. Students will gain an understanding of the fundamentals of programming languages. Students will also gain practical experience of developing for the internet, in-project negotiation, development, and the final design & publishing of an online application.

Within the web design course, emphasis is placed upon creative problem solving, design and visual awareness. Emphasis is placed on creative origination, problem solving and consideration of commercial products and processes. The web design course focuses on a wide range of multimedia skills including: graphic design,; web design; interactive media; animation and moving image. Throughout the course, you will develop your own interest within multimedia, which complement design awareness within the subject.

This course specialises in web design, marketing and promotions, with particular emphasis on designing for new media and across multiple platforms. An understanding of graphic design, branding, moving image and animation can be utilised in many areas such as the internet, mobile phones, and ambient media. This will all be underpinned by an understanding of key advertising strategies and core business knowledge. A wide range of employers, both local and national, actively seek to recruit those with particular web design oriented knowledge and skills.

Year 1 lays the groundwork for the innovative exploration of ideas; ideas that have a strong contextual foundation. The first year provides the relevant theoretical, practical and technical expertise from which you will be encouraged to develop your own specialist focus as you progress through the course.

Year 2 offers you the chance to gain professional experience through involvement with client briefs and professional work. The course will culminate in the proposition and execution of your own design brief which will be displayed in an end of year show.

Students must have between 100 and 240 UCAS points from the following:

  • At least two 'A' Levels at 'A2', one in a related subject area
  • BTEC Diploma or Extended Diploma in a media, IT or art & design-related subject area
  • Advanced Diploma with relevant Principal or Additional & Specialist Learning (ASL)
  • International Baccalaureate

Mature students with relevant experience and/or qualifications, including an Access to HE Diploma within a relevant area, are welcome to apply. You will be invited to attend an interview.
