Neurological conditions

Neurological conditions are disorders caused by damage or injury to the brain, including the spinal cord, nerves and neurons. There are many neurological conditions which can challenge an individual’s quality of life, dignity and independence. People who have a neurological condition have to learn to live life as fully as possible and may need support to do so. It is the role of the care worker to facilitate this support.  In order to do this, they need to have an understanding of different neurological conditions.

This course will look at how the brain works and how it plays a part in every function of the body, including movement, thought, language, memory and controlling of the senses. This will help you understand the impact that neurological conditions can have on an individual. Neurological conditions can be very diverse with regards to how they affect an individual, but some of the most commonly occurring ones that carers are likely to come across are studied in detail, including the causes of the condition, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and how the condition affects a person’s life. The learner is also given “good practice” tips and advice on how to work with a person who is affected by any of the conditions.
