Course Description

The rise in MRSA and the associated media attention, has led in turn, to the Government setting targets for reducing the number of deaths arising from these infections. To achieve these targets, it is necessary for all staff who work in NHS Hospital Trusts, Primary Care Trusts, nursing and social care to be trained to to ensure they understand these infections, what they are, how they can infect patients and, importantly, the measures that can be used to control cross infection. This course is intended to provide this training for staff working in these areas.

The Distance Learning Understanding MRSA course is organised into three modules. The first two modules will enable you, the learner, to gain an understanding of the different kind of agents that can cause infection and how they grow and mutate; how infection is spread and the measures that can be put in place to prevent this from taking place. In the third module MRSA is examined in more depth and you will understand how it has become a hospital ‘super bug’ resistant to antibiotics. Also in the third module you will learn what your role and legal obligations are in helping to reduce its spread. You don’t need any previous qualifications to take this course. It is designed to encourage your own personal development in an area that is important to you.

When the workbook activities and structured questions and work-based assignments have been verified, you will receive a certificate from NCFE, a nationally recognised awarding body. The course provides reading material designed to support workshop style delivery or as a flexible learning package, which you, the learner, can work through at your own pace. Each module asks you to complete a number of structured questions to ensure that you have the underpinning knowledge required and confirm that a thorough understanding has taken place. There are also work-based assignments, which you are required to complete to show how you have applied your learning directly to work practices and that you understand how it all fits in with current policies and procedures.

N.B. Please note that you are required to be employed within a work environment in order to complete this programme. Please check that you are able to fulfil the course requirements.
