Course Description
The Distance Learning Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) and the Criminal Justice System courseassumes the student has a prior knowledge of FASD together with the primary and secondary disabilities caused by FASD. We will use only the term FASD throughout this course, but the student should also consider ARND and ARBD as being associated problems. Between these three terms there will be a range of effects including physical, mental, behavioural and learning difficulties, the majority of these will have lifelong implications to the individual.
The course covers the secondary behaviours associated with FASD which may cause the individual to be more at risk of breaking the law more frequently than someone unaffected by FASD. It also covers assisting an individual with FASD through the court and trial procedures and understanding the requirements that need to be in place for the successful management of FASD within the court system.
The course aims to provide a nationally accredited certificated course covering a wide range of issues associated with alcohol use during pregnancy and the predisposition to criminal behaviour of an individual with FASD. The student will be provided with a flexible learning programme that is accessible to a wide range of learners and provide the student with an understanding that can be applied by those who either personally, professionally or voluntary have a special interest in this area.
The Learning Outcomes cover areas related to:
- How FASD lends itself to a predisposition of criminal behaviour
- How to assist an individual with FASD through the court and trial procedures
- Understand the requirements that need to be in place for the successful management of FASD within the court system.
