Description

A practical course exploring singing in a Jazz style - (suitable for beginners).  Learn a collection of songs and exercises within the Jazz idiom.  Explore Blues, Swing, call and response, singing in harmony and, if desired, solo singing and vocal improvisation.  As a group, you can work towards recording and performing work.

Additional costs may be incurred for the materials used during the course.

Learner & Entry Requirements: 

Suitable for beginners, no experience necessary.

Pen and paper for notes.  KAE is unable to offer refunds for any materials, equipment or books if the course is subsequently closed.

Course Aim & Objective: 

To explore singing in a Jazz style.

To become familiar with aspects of Jazz singing (Swing, Blues, call & response); to be able to participate in a collection of songs (developed by the group) within a Jazz style.  Increase confidence in approaching Jazz singing.

Assessment: 

Continuous observation, listening.  Learners are encouraged to reflect on their own development.  They are encouraged to practise at home to enhance enjoyment and progress.

Course Syllabus: 

Exercises/Warm ups, activities are explored/developed on a weekly basis.  Taught practically, using call & response repetition and, where needed, practical demonstration.  Feedback discussion is employed to explore progress/confidence towards improvising.  Songs: Blues, Swing, Standards - these accessible songs are from an oral tradition, and are taught orally without sheets or notation which can create barriers.
