We shall examine the use of geometric and figurative motifs, particularly in plaster and ceramic tilework - azulejos - at the Alhambra palace and generalife gardens in Granada. If time permits we shall also consider Málaga.

It is intended to show how the Islamic architects incorporated earlier - Roman - materials and traditions and to draw comparisons for instance with the glass mosaic-work of Damascus and Byzantium. The architecture will be placed in a wider context of cultural artefacts such as ivory boxes, wooden combs and ceramic dishes.  It is hoped that the course will provide a basis for students to go on to explore the new Jameel Gallery at the Victoria and Albert Museum and to understand what they encounter on holiday in other Islamic countries such as Syria and Jordan.

The TUTOR, Dr Claire Tylee, is a former university lecturer and qualified town-planner who lived and worked in Spain for many years. She now teaches a successful course at Kingston encouraging students to explore the architecture of London.
