Additional costs will be incurred for the materials/model fees used during the course.

Learner & Entry Requirement: 

No experience is necessary.  Beginners and advanced learners are welcome.

General & First Session: 

If you have a pencil and sketchbook please bring them but do not purchase them specifically for the course until after the first class.  Advice on materials is given at the first session.  KAE is unable to offer refunds for any materials, equipment or books if the course is subsequently closed.

Course Aim & Objective: 

To improve your drawing and painting skills by introducing you to working directly from life and developing your confidence in technical and imaginative skill.

By the end of the course you should have improved observational skills in drawing and painting, be able to draw with some accuracy, using a variety of media.  You should also be able to demonstrate an understanding of proportion, perspective, form and tone and show an understanding of colour in one or more techniques.

Assessment: 

No exam.  Homework - mainly voluntary.  Progress is monitored throughout the course.

On this course you will gain the following skills and knowledge:

  • Techniques for drawing accurately in pencil, charcoal, chalk, pastel, oil pastel, ink, line and wash
  • An understanding of shape, proportion, perspective and composition through use of line, tone, pattern and texture
  • How to experiment with mark-making in the above media
  • Examine and analyse  techniques of other artists, work from still life, a variety of set subjects, themes, reproductions and personal choices
  • An understanding of colour-mixing, basic colour theory, watercolour and acrylic painting
  • Ability to work from flowers and consider landscapes
