Description

Learn about various aspects of handmade ceramics using hand-building and wheel-thrown techniques, including advanced techniques and ceramic technology.

You must be familiar with clay preparation and basic construction methods. Receive individual tuition regarding your own assignment. Individual goals and learning depend on your existing experience.

Additional costs may be incurred for materials used during the course.

Learner & Entry Requirements:

Learners have completed a beginners course and received a minimum of 60 hours tuition (2.5/2 terms). Learners are familiar with clay preparation and glazing.

There is a small additional charge to cover the cost of materials.

General & First Session:

You are advised to wear old clothes and bring an apron if you already have one. Please do not purchase any items specifically for the course until after the first class. KAE is unable to offer refunds for any materials, equipment or books if the course is subsequently closed.

Course Aim & Objective:

Gain a good grounding in construction, decoration and glazing techniques in order to make your own handmade ceramics. Develop your creative abilities by working with clay. Develop an awareness of ceramics and acquire the practical skills for both making and decorating ceramics.

By the end of the course you should have made several ceramic pieces by hand-building or throwing.

Assessment:

Visual assessment of ceramic forms made.

We will recognise and record your progress and achievement through attainment of the following course goals.

  • Ability to construct a clay form to high standard
  • Ability to decorate a surface with a variety of ceramic materials
  • Knowledge of ceramic materials and methods of application
  • Ability to design and complete a complex form
  • Ability to be inventive and creative in using clay
  • Maintaining a sketch /note book with ideas, designs, materials
  • Understand and apply the appropriate visual risk assessments and the Health & Safety skills and knowledge required to carry out activities related to this course.
  • Your own negotiated aims and objectives.
