What you will need for your first session1 kg. White sugarpaste (Regal Ice from cake decorating shops or Dr Oetker from supermarkets)

A Tupperware container to bring models home.

You will also need the following equipment; a rolling pin, an apron, a fine artist's paintbrush, cocktail sticks, small sharp knife, pastry brush, cling film. Please either bring a, dish cloth and tea-towel OR please bring enough utensils to work with and then take home to wash. A small washing-up bowl and washing-up liquid will be available for use at the centre. KAE is unable to offer refunds for any materials, equipment or books if the course is subsequently closed.

Overall course aims and objectivesTo develop confidence in handling sugarpaste and create various forms from it, using different cake decorating techniques

On this course you will develop the following skills:Cut, shape and decorate a novelty cake. Cover and decorate a celebration cake. Produce various models, make a bas-relief picture. This will require 2 or 3 home prepared cakes and a combination of ready made fairy cakes, or doughnuts or walnut whips.

In the first session

In the first session we will be making models to put on cake for the following week. Later on we will be producing a Valentine's Day cake (or another cake chosen by the group e.g. mother's day).

Assessment:Tutor observation and achievements in finished work.

We will recognise and record your progress and achievement through attainment of the following course goals.

  • Gain confidence in handling sugarpaste and other cake decorating materials.
  • Develop design skills for use on small and large cakes.
  • Cut and shape a novelty cake.
  • Decorate a celebration cake.
  • Understand and apply the appropriate visual risk assessments and the Health & Safety skills and knowledge required to carry out activities related to this course.
  • Your own negotiated aims and objectives.
