These internationally-recognised qualifications are aimed at beginners wishing to train as professional Complementary Therapists, or existing Therapists wishing to extend their practice skills, or formalise their existing knowledge through accreditation. Each course may be studied separately, or as part of as part of a course of study over time, gaining both underpinning and post-graduate skills and taking beginners to practitioner level in one year. Male and female learners are welcome in our classes and all learners are expected to actively participate in any practical massage sessions.

This course, while suitable for complete beginners, will be working at Level 3 (which is equivalent to NVQ 3, Advanced GNVQ, BTEC National and AS/A Level). You should learn all aspects of human anatomy and physiology for both major and minor systems, including skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, neurological, respiratory and digestive systems.

For successful completion of this accreditation you will undertake 22 externally marked assignments (approx one page each) and an externally-set ITEC multiple choice theory paper (55% pass mark).

Extensive home study will be required for all ITEC level 3 courses. You need to study at least 3-4 hours each week outside of class in order to assimilate, understand and prepare work.

Learner & Entry Requirements:Learners must be self starters, able to plan use of their time and attend regularly.

5 GCSE passes at A-C or equivalent.

However exemptions are made for adult learners with experience in the complementary therapy work place and/or who have good command of written and spoken English and are able to demonstrate literacy skills at level 2, through completion of a national literacy test and interview. If you fall into this category, please contact the co-ordinator, Judy Evans, before enrolling.

General & First Session:The text book - 'Introductory Guide to Anatomy & Physiology' Revised Edition containing CD, by Louise Tucker (Pub: Holistic Therapy Books) should be purchased after confirmation that the course is running.

If you have notepad and pen, please bring them but do not purchase them specifically for the course until after the first class. KAE is unable to offer refunds for any materials, equipment or books if the course is subsequently closed.

To avoid disruption and as a courtesy to fellow learners, participants are asked to arrive on time for all sessions and inform the tutor, in advance if possible, if they cannot attend a session.

Course Aim & Objective:Develop a thorough understanding of Anatomy and Physiology as well as key disorders of body systems, so that you can apply this knowledge to your professional practice as a Holistic Therapist. To prepare you to undertake the ITEC examination in Anatomy & Physiology.

By the end of the course you should be able to: describe the structure and functions of all body systems; explain the inter-relationship between various body systems; and describe key disorders affecting each body system.

To provide skills at Level 3 in the Qualifications and Credit Framework for those interested in the Complementary Therapy industry. Prepare you for the ITEC professional examinations in Holistic Massage and qualify learners as Complementary Therapists at Level 3 in the Complementary industry

Assessment:Question and Answer sessions, home-work, class tests and Mock Exams

22 externally marked assignments (approx one page each) and an externally-set ITEC multiple choice theory paper (50% pass mark).

You will be required to spend at least three or four hours a week studying outside of class in order to assimilate, understand and prepare work. Throughout the course, there are tests and assessments, providing an opportunity for progress to be monitored. Homework is set each week and time is set aside in class to ask any questions.

Topics and assessments may be covered in slightly different groupings and in a different order than those indicated below and over a varying number of weeks according to the prospectus information. HOMEWORK will be to study work covered in class.

  • Class introductions, course outline, study planning, overview of body – cells, tissues, systems; anatomical language.
  • Cells – structure, functions, cell division. Tissues – structure, function, types.
  • (TEST on cells and tissues) Skin – structure, function, types; diseases and disorders.
  • (TEST on skin) Overview of Skeletal system – functions, bone types, bone tissue, joints, fractures, diseases and disorders.
  • (TEST on skeletal system)Bones of cranium and face; bones of vertebrae and shoulder girdle.
  • (TEST on bones) Bones of upper limb, lower limb and pelvic girdle.
  • (TEST on bones) Overview of Muscular system – functions, types, origin and insertion, movement, lactic acid, diseases and disorders.
  • (TEST on muscular system)Muscles of cranium, face and trunk.
  • (TEST on muscles)Muscles of upper and lower limbs.
  • (TEST on muscles)Cardiovascular system – composition of blood, blood vessels, heart, pulmonary and systemic circulation, blood pressure.
  • Cardiovascular system (contd.) – veins and arteries of the body, diseases and disorders, interrelationship with other systems.
  • (TEST on cardiovascular system) Lymphatic system and immunity – structure and functions of lymph, lymphatic tissue and lymph nodes, components and functions of immune system, inter-relationship between systems.
  • (TEST on lymphatic system + mid-course test on work to date) Respiratory system – structure and function of organs and accessory organs, process and mechanism of respiration, control of respiration, pulmonary circulation, diseases and disorders, inter-relationship with other systems.
  • (TEST on respiratory system) Digestive system – structure and function of organs and accessory organs, processes of digestion and absorption, diseases and disorders, inter-relationship with other systems.
  • (TEST on digestive system) Urinary system – structure and function of organs, process of filtration, composition of urine, diseases and disorders, inter-relationship with other systems.
  • (TEST on urinary system) Endocrine system – position of main glands, hormones secreted and results of hypo and hyper secretion, effects of hormones on body, diseases and disorders, inter-relationship with other systems.
  • (TEST on endocrine system) Reproductive system – structure and functions of male and female reproductive systems, menstrual cycle, structure and functions of the breast, diseases and disorders, inter-relationship with other systems.
  • (TEST on reproductive system) Neurological (nervous) system – structure, functions and position of all components, effects of stress on system, diseases and disorders, inter-relationship with other systems.
  • (TEST on nervous system) Review and revision.
  • MOCK EXAM.
