PURPOSEAims to provide an advanced foundation and comprehensive
understanding of one of the most contested concepts in contemporary
discourse, terrorism, and its relationship with relevant and
related issues in the field of security studies. Based on the
multi-dimensional and multi-disciplinary nature of the phenomenon,
the programme provides an overview of the theories and paradigms
related to the concepts of terrorism and counter terrorism in order
to enable students to undertake further research or enter into
careers targeted at understanding these issues.
DESCRIPTION
This programme is interdisciplinary, involving history,
political science, and international relations, as well as
sociology and social psychology, risk studies, and even critical
approaches. Depending upon the pathway chosen and the mix of
options within each pathway, the focus of the degree will vary from
a strong emphasis on security and counterterrorism issues through
to a critical social science approach and analysis of societal
response and adaptation. Based on the multi-dimensional and
multi-disciplinary nature of the phenomenon, the programme provides
an overview of the theories and paradigms related to the concepts
of terrorism and counter terrorism in order to enable students to
undertake further research or enter into careers targeted at
understanding these issues.
This programme adds a unique element to the way in which the issues
of terrorism and security are understood by addressing the
multi-dimensional and multi-disciplinary nature of the phenomenon.
Students will learn how to combine and apply the well-honed
multi-disciplinary approach that characterises the work of the
Department of War Studies with social scientific approaches.
