Description
An Education Studies degree in central London designed for anyone working in a school who is not a qualified teacher. The programme introduces students to the theoretical underpinnings of teaching and learning. Work-based assignments facilitate the integration of theory into professional practice. The Foundation Degree will be charged at £4,500 (for the first year, increasing in line with inflation for following year).

PROGRAMME DESCRIPTIONThe Foundation Degree in Education Studies is aimed at anyone working in school who is not a qualified teacher eg teaching assistants, mentors, coaches, learning support assistants and counsellors. The programme introduces students to the theoretical underpinnings of teaching and learning and students will be encouraged to link this deeper understanding to their professional practice. Each semester will include a work-based assignment to facilitate this integration. Students will:
- Understand how social and historical factors have combined to create current educational structures.
- Reflect on their own professional context and professional goals
- Understand the process of child development
- Engage with current theory on curriculum design.
- Develop knowledge of theories of social justice in relation to the education system.
- Understand how assessment can be used as a means for students to learn.

CAREERS BA English Language & Communication can lead to a career in language research, in the mass media and communications industries, in working with people with language disabilities, in teaching, or to professional roles within multilingual communities. A detailed understanding of how language operates in and shapes the modern world will open the door to a wide range of career opportunities. The BSc Science Engagement and Communication offers an excellent platform for those who wish to pursue a career working in museums, science centres, zoos or science festivals; as well as science policy, science journalism or academia.
Students taking the Foundation Degree /BA in Education Studies will gain a deeper understanding of their work in school. Students formalise and build on existing skills while gaining a qualification that will enhance their employment opportunities. The Foundation Degree/BA in Education Studies can also be the first step to a Postgraduate Certificate of Education and to Qualified Teacher Status. TEACHING STYLE Teaching methods include lectures, small group discussions and problem solving, as well as personal dissertation supervision. Many modules are informed by the research specialisms of the staff who make a strong contribution to international research.. The majority of teaching will be face-to-face but this is supplmented by use of the King’s virtual learning environment.STRUCTURE OF PROGRAMMES & ASSESSMENT BA English Language & Communication students follow a common first-year programme which provides the foundation for a wider choice in the second and third years. Students then tend to focus on two of three key themes:
1. language and linguistics
2. psycholinguistics and education
3. sociolinguistics
Assessment is by both examination (about one third), and by coursework (two thirds). Types of coursework include essays, reports, data analysis, oral presentations, mini-projects and a third year dissertation based on the student’s own research.
BSc Science Engagement and Communication students follow a common 3 year programme, but are required to take two specialist option modules from other departments; one in each of the first two years. They also complete a 4 week placement in the second year of study at one of the UK’s best known science engagement institutions. Assessment is by a range of different coursework assignments.
Education Studies Foundation Degree / BA students follow a common two-year programme for the award of the foundation degree, with eight modules in the first year and six in the second year. There is the option of a further year to achieve the award of a BA, which includes the completion of an extended piece of writing for the dissertation. Assessment is by a range of different coursework assignments. There are no examinations. LOCATION The department is based in the Franklin-Wilkins Building, Waterloo Bridge Wing with all the facilities offered by the College easily available and the cultural attractions of the South Bank on its doorstep. The on-site library and computing facilities are readily accessible together with the opportunity to use the University of London library at Senate House.
