This module enables students to focus specifically on methods of helping learners, either traditionally in the classroom or online or both. They will undertake some brief action research, involving methods such as trials of new classroom procedures, teaching observations, questionnaires or semi-structured interviews with learners or teaching colleagues in their own institutions, and so on. Like several other modules in the Advanced Educational Practice programme, this is a self-study module requiring 60 hours of study in the participant's work place. Support is given in a structured workbook, including readings, that guides them through a reflective process and requires no attendance at the Institute of Education. Where possible and appropriate, there will be liaison and peer group discussions with other students following the same module. A tutor will be available by email or through the Blackboard VLE to respond to questions. Participants will be guided to provide a portfolio in four sections covering a review of a selection of literature of their choice, a short account of their action in supporting learning, a reflective account of their own learning during the process, and a report of the dissemination of their actions.
