It will prepare you to play a leading role in supporting your colleagues in developing their mathematics teaching. As part of your studies you will cover topics such as geometry, fractions, early counting, data handling and working with colleagues.

This programme is cited in a recent Ofsted report, "Good practice in primary mathematics", as an example of how maintained schools can develop the mathematical expertise of their staff.

Who is this programme for?

Attendance

This programme requires a two year commitment. The next cohort will begin in October 2012. You will:

  • attend 5 tutor days at a Higher Education Institute per year (Monday 29 October & Tuesday 30 October 2012; Saturdays 9 February, 27 April, 22 June 2013)
  • attend 6 half-day local meetings per year (ordinarily taking place during term time)
  • receive a half-day school visit from your local support consultant each year
  • be required to complete self-study as part of the course.

How is the course assessed?

You will submit two 2500-3000 word assignments in your first year and one 5000-6000 word assignment in your second year. You will have the support of a personal tutor at your Higher Education Institution and full access to library facilities.

Entry requirements

You must be a fully qualified teacher working with primary-aged children in a school in the Greater London area. (See programme specification (pdf, 0.2mb) for full details of entry requirements).

Support from your Headteacher for your participation on the programme is essential. You will be using school-based activities in your classroom and working with colleagues as part of the programme and the assessment process and you will be required to attend 6 local meetings per year during term time.

The next cohort of students will begin their course in October 2012.
