This masters degree is a joint award with City University

This masters degree will:

• give you a detailed understanding of special educational needs in relation to children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) and the relevant current legislation
• enhance your knowledge of how children develop speech, language, literacy and numeracy
• develop your awareness of the social and emotional development and needs of children with SLCN
• provide information about assessment processes and intervention procedures for children with SLCN
• focus on language and communication needs from an educational, health and social perspective.

This masters degree provides the opportunity to:

• study the first masters-level programme to be set within the Joint Professional Development Framework initiated by the children's communication charity I CAN
• gain a qualification that is endorsed by the Department for Education, the Department of Health, the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists and the Teaching Agency
• take some modules at City University.

Who is this programme for?

Qualified teachers who have an interest in SLCN. Speech and language therapists (including early years practitioners) working with children and young people with SLCN.

Entry requirements

A good first degree in a relevant subject, plus a teaching qualification or a professional qualification in speech and language therapy. It is desirable for applicants to have appropriate experience of educational settings and/or in special educational needs, or working with children with SLCN.

Mixed mode, including face-to-face sessions at the IOE and/or City University, and online learning.

Graduates of this masters degree are currently working as:

• speech and language therapist for a London NHS trust
• specific learning difficulties coordinator in an independent special school
• coordinator of a speech and language therapy service.
