Graduate Certificate in Psychology
This programme will:
- impart a broad knowledge of psychological theory and research
- examine psychological research on language, the functions of the brain, personality, cognitive development, memory and our capacity to think, learn and solve problems
- look at the effects of the dynamics within groups (such as leadership) and between groups (such as prejudice and aggression).
- develop your skills of critical analysis and your ability to structure an argument and support it with evidence
- develop your ability to evaluate psychological theory and research.
- provide a basic introduction to some of the statistical techniques commonly used in psychological research.

Features
You can choose one of two specialist accredited conversion routes that, together with the appropriate masters degree, lead to Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) with the British Psychological Society (BPS):
GBC1
Graduate Certificate in Psychology (passed at masters qualifying level) + MA/MSc Psychology of EducationGBC2
Graduate Certificate in Psychology (passed at masters qualifying level) + MA/MSc Child DevelopmentWho is this programme for?
GBC1 and GBC2 (see Features) are appropriate for anyone who is suitably qualified in a subject other than psychology and would like to gain GBC – a necessary requirement if you would like a career in psychology.
These routes also require you to study for either the MA/MSc in Psychology of Education (GBC1) or the MA/MSc in Child Development (GBC2) after you gain your Graduate Certificate in Psychology with a B grade or above in each module. Completion of the certificate alone does not make you eligible for GBC.
Entry requirements
A good first degree or equivalent.
How are you assessed?
By coursework assignments and examinations.
Attendance
Face-to-face evening sessions.
Where do our students go?
Graduates of this programme continue on to a relevant BPS accredited masters programme (as listed under GBC1 and GBC2, see right) to complete their conversion.
