Course content

Half or one day in-house course

The techniques learned on this course are delivered through practical application.

  • Benefits of effective appraisals - understand what makes an appraisal effective for the appraiser, appraisee and the organisation.
  • The appraisal environment - understand the benefits of creating the right environment for an appraisal and how to use that to develop rapport and trust; understand your role; develop the right intent; be prepared; be physically and psychologically ready.
  • Active listening - make your appraisees feel comfortable and help them understand that you are listening by developing key listening and body language skills.
  • Questioning skills - break free from conversation-limiting questions by using multiple techniques including open, closed, probing, comparison, leading, multiple and hypothetical questions.
  • Give and receive effective feedback - use the 'BROFF' model (Behaviour, Reason, Outcome, Feelings and Future) to give and receive constructive and meaningful feedback.
  • Bannish barriers - understand what barriers you and the appraisee may face before the meeting and find out how to turn them into positive actions.
  • The appraisal meeting - be able to choose the correct format in which to conduct your appraisal meeting.
  • Change your approach - Use proven models such as 'GROW' to coach team members to achieve their best.
