Effective Time Management

Essential, but often overlooked skills to help you be more organised, work efficiently, increase productivity and save time

Time management is not just about learning to say 'no'. It's about allowing your people to develop a range of practical strategies and options to build a realistic action plan. Refreshingly fast paced and unlike other courses it avoids the trap of presenting a 'one size fits all' approach to managing time, recognising that we all work in different ways and that therefore different approaches work best for different people.

Benefits of the Effective Time Management course

Effective time management is a core skill for anyone wishing to work efficiently and establish good habits. Implementing their action plan will help them to reduce stress and enhance their productivity, and:

  • Gain control of their day and the tasks they have to do – become better organised,  understand how they currently manage time, discover the impact of situations that waste  time, realise habits that may not be time effective and find out how identifying these can help efficiency.
  • Improve productivity and help to meet goals – through the seven practical strategies, this course will introduce attendees to an effective action plan to help them maximise time.

All you would expect from a professional time management course... plus additional elements that make this course unique.

Who should attend?

This course is of benefit to anyone who is expected to manage high workloads and changing priorities, effectively. Provided that there is a degree of autonomy in how individuals organise their work and they are prepared to take control of those elements that are within their remit, they will find this course invaluable.

Course content

Half-day in-house course for groups and teams

The course starts by ensuring that there is a good understanding of time and how each person currently perceives and manages time. It then goes on to explore seven inter-related aspects of effective time management, before finishing with building a personal action plan to establish helpful new habits.

Understanding time, time traps and time wasters

How we use time and how we lose time. Understand the factors that affect how we perceive, use and waste time. You will find out about:

  • The hurry pattern
  • Procrastination
  • Interruptions
  • Habits and the brain
  • Identifying time wasters and blockers

Seven Practical Strategies:

  • Understand yourself and your body clock - how and when do you work best - and how you can make use of that insight.
  • Prioritising and planning - getting proactive about planning and then making sure that those plans work for you. Includes the power of 'NOW', effective prioritisation and goal setting.
  • Taking control - most of us have more resources, more power and more autonomy than we think. The trick is learning to use all three effectively.
  • Power tools - sometimes we need to find ways of simply working more efficiently. Here we provide a rapid introduction to visual overviews, effective skimming and scanning.
  • Use technology effectively - how we use the array of technology available to us is very much a matter of personal choice. Here we take time to think about how to work with emails and other technology in empowering ways.
  • Manage your personal energy level - breaks, brain food and planning 'down time'. How to keep energy levels high so that you are working effectively all of the time.
  • Your working environment - whilst some things are inevitably outside our control, there are almost always some things that we can do to enhance the space around us to help us to work more effectively - including effective approaches to filing.

Action Planning

During the course, delegates are encouraged to consider how they can personally make use of the various ideas and strategies; taking ownership of identifying new, helpful ways of working that fit their preferences, personality and situation. In this final section, some additional time saving tips are given and then delegates complete their own personal action plan.

All you would expect from a professional time management course... plus additional elements that make this course unique.

The programme is interlaced with brain breaks and energy enhancers, incorporating desk exercises and energy boosting techniques to provide the optimum environment for learning.

An option to build a tailored course

The course described here is a focused half day workshop, recognising that for many people who are short of time in their working day, taking longer than half a day is a real challenge. However, the course is necessarily rapid and we recognise that in order to meet specific needs, you may wish to explore some elements in more detail by tailoring and extending the course.

Please talk to us about your ideas and your specific challenges so that we can put together a solution that is right for you. Here are a few ideas based on what some of our clients have done in the past:

Mind Mapping - Spend more time on learning how to use Mind Maps so that this versatile skill can be used for a wide range of tasks. There is also the option for delegates to complete a Mind Mapping e-learning module prior to the course.

Speed Reading - Where some of the pressures on time come from too much to read, spending time on learning how to speed read can be invaluable.

Cognitive Behavioural Methods - Some of the techniques explored on this course are based on cognitive behavioural methods; challenging and changing existing ways of responding to the things that are affecting our working lives. In some cases, particularly where resulting stress levels are excessive, it is useful to extend this aspect of the course.

Managing Personal Energy Levels - On this course, we cover some of the basics of food, drink, exercise and relaxation – and how they affect our energy levels and therefore our effectiveness at work. These are wide subjects and some organisations find it beneficial to explore them in more detail or run a follow up course.
