Course Content
The Certificate is a nationally recognised qualification that is equivalent to a GCSE at grade C or above and therefore provides a natural stepping stone to other Level 2 and Level 3 courses. The main focus of the course will be concerned with acquiring and developing your skills in Art, Design and Creative Craft. These include 2D and 3D skills in areas such as observational drawing, painting, print making, clay, glass, wood and metal. Practical work will be underpinned with contextual understanding along with design process and idea development techniques. Induction activities within each area will allow you to develop new skills and understanding of a broad range of materials and techniques. Alongside this you will be introduced to the design process showing you how to progress, refine and evaluate artefacts produced; as the course progresses you will be able to specialise in an area of your choice for the final unit in order to complete the course.
Assessment Method
Assessment for this course is based on students achieving set criteria and specified learning outcomes. Assignments allow for continuous assessment throughout the course and there is no end of year examination. Whilst this is a practical course you need to be able to express yourself well through written annotation and evaluations. You can also expect assignments to have theory elements as well as practical production work. Methods of study and assessment include:
- Practical Demonstrations
- Practical designing and making
- Independent research/investigation
- Set assignments.
Progression
Students who successfully complete the Certificate may be eligible to progress onto further or higher level courses such as the BTEC Diploma in Art & Design (Level 2), the BTEC Diploma Art & Design (Level 3) or possibly the Foundation Diploma in Art & Design (Level 3). From there students can go onto a range of trainee jobs within the industry. Alternatively the course can be a good foundation for anyone wishing to progress to a Higher Education course in this field such as art & design, Fashion and Textiles, Design Crafts and Graphic Design.
Additional Information
All applicants will be required to attend an interview at college where you will be required to bring a portfolio and/ or evidence of the art, design and craft work that you have produced. You will also be required to take some initial assessment and written tests which are all part of the standard procedures to assess capability for courses. At least five hours of independent study time per week is required which could take the form of drawing development in a sketchbook, research into artists and art movements or developing ideas for projects. There will be a cost for art materials, sketchbooks and equipment and the cost varies depending on how much you require but the range could be from £35.00 - £75.00. There is an Art shop within the Arts Centre which stocks some of the materials and equipment at competitive prices.
Entry Requirements
As this course is aimed at adult learners who may be returning to education or progressing from a related Level 1 course, formal qualifications are not as important as ability within art, design and crafts. You will need to demonstrate a strong commitment and enthusiasm for the subject area and bring evidence of your work to interview. You should have a standard of literacy that will enable you to produce coherent observations and commentaries about your own and others work.
