Plumbing & Heating Level 1

If you enjoy doing practical things and you want a skill that you can use in different ways, this could be perfect course for you. To become a qualified plumber you will need to achieve a level 2 or 3 plumbing qualification, depending on your experience. You will need to follow technical drawings and plans, and have a careful and well-ordered approach to work. You will also need good customer care skills. As a plumber, you may work in one or more of the following areas: • Installing and repairing water supplies, heating systems and drainage • Servicing gas and oil-fired central heating systems, boilers and radiators • Installing and fixing domestic appliances like showers and washing machines • Servicing air-conditioning and ventilation units • Fitting weather-proof materials, joints and flashings to roofs, chimneys and walls. On all jobs you would use hand and power tools, which could include welding equipment. To become a plumber you will need to have: • The ability to follow technical drawings and plans • Good practical skills • Good problem-solving skills • A careful and well ordered approach to work • A reasonable level of fitness • An awareness of safety issues and legal regulations • The ability to work as part of a team and alone • Good customer care skills. Salary range: £8000 - £35,000+ Average hours per week: 40

Steel toe capped shoes/boots and sturdy clothing to protect your body will be required.

3 GCSE Grades A* - D in Maths, English and Science. Subject to interview with lecturing staff.

Upon successfully completing your Level 1 qualification you can progress onto a Level 2 qualification, from a Level 2 qualification you will be able to progress to the full time Level 3 qualification or advanced apprenticeship.

Gloucestershire College student, Connor Moore who is on the Level 2 Plumbing course has been selected to go to the regional HIPEX competition in 2013 and compete for a regional award. Connor won an inhouse competition at the GC Construction School at Mitcheldean by producing the best work which secured his place in the midlands regional heat of the prestigious competition. Connor who is 16 is carrying on a long line of plumbing tradition as the vast majority of his family are plumbers including his brother who is going to employ Connor once qualified. Connor says “I love studying for my plumbing diploma and am really looking forward to getting into the world of work when I complete my qualification this year”
