About This Course

Family Literacy Language and Numeracy (FLLN) courses are specially funded to target parents and carers to help them improve their literacy and numeracy skills. Family events and activities are a perfect platform to encourage further learning. The informal, non-threatening nature of these activities can engage family members who may not normally get involved and who can benefit most. A sense of fun and emphasis on enjoyment can generate enthusiasm that can be built on. A positive taste of learning can help overcome barriers to further learning. Participants who learn through their lives are more likely to be healthier, happier and more able to engage in society. They can discover new interests, aptitudes and abilities which they can go on to explore. There are positive effects on family communication and functioning as parents become more able to support their children. They also benefit from making new friends, developing a support network and feel motivated to take other courses. There will be a range of activities from fun briefing sessions or short introductory courses leading on to courses of about 30 hours duration by the end of which you will be encouraged to take a short literacy or numeracy exercise to see just how much you have learned. To help you find the time and support to attend the sessions there may be creche facilities organised if sufficient interest is shown. The tutors are all trained to work with adults and will help you, especially if you have had bad learning experiences in the past.

Entry Criteria

You should be over 19 (at the previous 31 August) and have had UK residency for 3 years or married to a UK resident for 1 year. Clarification can be sought from Gloucestershire College Student Services.
