This A Level can lead to higher education courses, universities or as an entry qualification into employment What will I be doing on the course? Aimed at students who wish to understand how economic policy influences the daily lives and decisions of individuals, businesses and Governments. AS is divided into two units: Micro and Macro Economics. You will explore a wide variety of current economic issues applicable to individual markets and the national economy such as the operation of demand, supply in different markets, causes of market failure and methods used by government to intervene in the running of the UK economy. At A2 you will consider how businesses behave under different market structures such as Monopoly, Oligopoly and Perfect Competition; investigate how these structures influence the price we pay for goods and services, how Labour markets work in determining wages and income. Unit 4 builds on the knowledge gained in Unit 2 considering UK economic growth and development within the European and Global Context.
Additional NotesFor full time students the course will form part of a larger programme of study which consists of timetabled sessions, enrichment activities, work experience and private study time. To achieve this a student will normally be asked to select from columns of the 6th Form matrix in each year of study. If a student falls below this programme requirement they may be classed as part time by some external agencies and may be required to pay fees for their tuition and/or exams. Please check with the tutor at interview that the subjects you have selected form a full-time programme. Every full time 6th Form student will have a personal tutor and will study a tutorial programme. The tutor will be responsible for the pastoral care of the student and for the tracking and monitoring of their progress on the course. This subject can be selected on its own for part time study for which tuition fees may be payable (please consult Student Services for fee concessions). Part time students may also be required to pay exam fees. You may have the opportunity to go on trips during the year. A small charge will be payable for these visits.

Case StudiesSimon A Levels: History, Politics, Philosophy and Ethics, Economics Simon is studying for his A2 exams after achieving three A’s in his AS Levels with us last year. In his AS History exam he achieved 100%. “I am really pleased with my results from my AS exams and am working hard to do just as well in my A Level exams this year. I really like the centre's relaxed environment and how the lecturers treat you like adults; they have a way of providing the lesson and information you need without being pedantic. My Philosophy and Ethics course sometimes involves going away and producing a presentation on a certain topic which I really enjoy. My presentations always end up looking like textbooks… but at least it’s usually fun. I am now looking forward to completing my A Levels and going on to study at Cambridge University in September.”
