About This Course

A Level 2 Diploma in Information Technology is broadly equivalent to studying four GCSEs at grades A* - C. As such it is a good vocational choice for those students who have an interest in technical IT but who have not achieved suitable GCSE grades to start on our suite of National Diploma courses. About This Course

The Level 2 Diploma in Information Technology gives a firm foundation in all IT disciplines. Over the two years you will study 6 units: Communicating in the IT Industry (half unit) - working in IT requires good communication skills whether this is verbally delivery or traditionally written. Working in the IT Industry (half unit) - learning about the roles and responsibilities of being successfully employed in the IT industry Computer Systems - investigating in practical terms how hardware and software combine to create a working computer system Installing Computer Hardware - teaching you how to plan and safely install or upgrade computer hardware installing Computer Software - teaching you how to plan and safely install or upgrade computer software Website Development - showing you how to plan and build effective websites of your very own! Software Design - giving you the skills to design and create working programmes in a popular professional programming language (Microsoft Visual Basic .NET) Methods of Assessment: Typically Level 2 Diploma programmes have no formal exams, preferring to test your knowledge and understanding through a mixture of vocationally relevant assignments and projects. Assignments usually involve a high-degree of practical work although some will require you to complete background research before starting the task. Most assignments will involve you doing work outside scheduled classes although your lecturers are fully committed to give you support when you need it.

Duration: 1 year, attendance: full time Students should bring a pen to the first class and a bag capable of securely carrying folders, paper, books etc. Student course booklet and a USB memory stick will be provided during induction - these form the materials fee that you are charged at enrolment. Students will register with the examination board (Edexcel) during October. Students under the age of 19 at the commencement of the programme will not have to pay this fee. Students will have the opportunity to attend one or more course related day trips or activities during the year. A fee will be charged for this at enrolment. Prospective students should send completed Application Forms to Admissions. All applicants will be asked to attend an interview. INDUSTRY INFORMATION Key facts: •There is a total IT and Telecoms workforce of 1.5 million of which: ?890,000 people are in IT and Telecoms products and services ?600,000 IT and Telecoms professionals are working in organisations outside of the IT and Telecoms industries •There are around 105,000 businesses in the UK offering IT and Telecoms products and services. •IT-intensive sectors represent 55% of the UK's total Gross Value Added. •Less than 1% of those employed in IT and Telecoms occupations are under 18. •22% of companies who are trying to recruit IT and Telecoms professionals report difficulties in attracting applicants with the right skills. •58% of the workforce has a degree or higher education qualification. •The IT industry is predicted to grow at a rate of 2.5% per year for the next ten years. •There are 100,930 IT manufacturing and services establishments in the UK employing 600,000 people. •The IT workforce accounts for 4% of the UK workforce. Jobs in the IT industry include: Business analyst; Games developer; CAD/CAM Programmer/Trainer; IT trainer; Service technician; Software engineer/architect; Technology consultant; Web designer; Systems architect; Technical author.

Entry Criteria

5 GCSE (A* - E) or Level 1 Diploma for IT Users (Merit, plus key skills) plus English GCSE at Grade C or above.

Progression Details

Successful completion of this programme at the indicated level will permit entry to our BTEC National Extended Diploma suite of programmes in IT, Forensic Computing and Interactive Games Design. Progression into the workplace in junior IT positions is also possible for the more capable learners. Your personal tutor and course leader will discuss your progression opportunities as your studies progress.
