Introduction to IPv6

Overview

IPv6 is the next generation internet protocol. This course will describe the benefits, features and operations of the IPv6 protocol. It will explain the technical details of the the protocol. The process of coming online and being an active host are described in detail, including a detailed overview of the cable modem IPv6 boot process. An overview of routing, migration and deployment are also part of this course.

Content

PART 1: INTRODUCTION

• The goals of IPv6, header format, basic concepts, addresses.

PART 2: COMING ONLINE AS IPv6 HOST

• How to obtain an address, address resolution, different addresses and their goals. Special attention is paid to the boot process of a cable modem including specific DHCPv6 options.

PART 3: BEING AN ACTIVE IPv6 HOST

• Neighbour discovery, changes for UDP and TCP over IPv6.

PART 4: BEING AN ACTIVE IPv6 ROUTER

• Routers and IPv6 routing protocols.

PART 5: COEXISTENCE

• How to migrate from IPv4 to IPv6 and have the two protocols in coexistence.

Basic understanding of data communication and IP.
