About Special Educational Needs Course

- Understand how to support positive practice with children and young people with speech, language and communication needs
- Understand the speech, language and communication needs of children and young people with behavioural, social and emotional difficulties.
Syllabus
Unit 1: Child and young person’s development
This unit will begin to address learning outcome 1 (stated above). This learning outcome will be divided into a set of activities to guide your studies. In this unit you will explore the expected pattern of children and young people’s development from birth to 19 years and how the different areas of development can affect one another.
Unit 2: The support of disabled children and young people and those with specific requirements
This unit will focus on learning outcome 2 (stated above). This unit will be divided into a set of activities to guide your studies. In this unit you will research how you as a practitioner can support disabled children or young people and those with specific needs in partnership with their parents/carers. You will also research partnership working with other agencies and professionals.
Unit 3: Supporting children and young people to achieve their learning potential
This unit will focus on learning outcome 3 (stated above). This unit will be divided into a set of activities to guide your studies. In this unit you will learn how to support children and young people to ensure that they take every possible opportunity to make the most of learning and achieve their learning potential.
Unit 4: Working with children and young people with speech, language and communication needs.
This unit will focus on learning outcomes 4 and 5 (stated above). This unit will be divided into a set of activities to guide your studies. In this unit you will research how practitioners can and should work with children and young people at the centre of their practice, basing their work on the strengths of the children and young people rather than focussing on their difficulties. You will explore the way in which behaviour, social and emotional difficulties are linked with speech, language and communication development and research effective ways to support the speech, language and communication development of children and young people with behaviour, emotional and social difficulties.
Qualifications
On completion of your course, you will receive the dual award:

Award 2 is issued by our Awarding Body: Level 3 Special Educational Needs (SEN) Award
At the end of this course successful learners will also receive a Level 3 NCFE Award Certificate of Achievement. Our course has been accredited under our NCFE IIQ Licence and the course measurable learning outcomes have been benchmarked at Level 3 (using Ofqual’s Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF) level descriptors) to allow you to consider the depth of study, difficulty, and level of achievement involved.

There is no experience or previous qualifications required for enrolment on this course. It is available to all students, of all academic backgrounds.

Study Hours
This is only an approximate figure and is dependant upon how much time you can dedicate to your studies and how well you grasp the learning concepts in the course material. Furthermore, at the end of each lesson there is a question paper that needs to be completed and returned to your tutor. You should allow at least 1 - 2 hours of study to complete each question paper.
The approximate amount of time required to complete the course is: 60 hrs.
