Understanding child development forms part of the curriculum for the various qualifications you can study for if you wish to work with children/young people.

The “child” in this context of this course will include young people up to the age of nineteen years which is the age range defined in the children and young people’s workforce qualifications.

This course is divided into four units, each of which deals with a particular aspect of development. Each unit also addresses one or more of the course learning outcomes so that when you have completed the entire course you will have achieved all the course learning outcomes as follows:

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  1. Know the main stages of child and young person development
  2. Understand the kinds of influences that affect children and young person’s development
  3. Understand how to support children and young person’s development
  4. Understand how to support children and young person’s positive behaviour
  5. Understand the potential effects of transitions on children and young person’s development

Syllabus

Unit 1: Know the main stages of child and young person’s development

This unit will begin to address learning outcome 1 (stated above). This learning outcome will be divided into a set of activities to guide your studies. In this unit you will explore the expected pattern of children and young people’s development from birth to 19 years and how the different areas of development can affect one another.

Unit 2: Understand the kinds of influences that affect children and young person’s development

This unit will focus on learning outcome 2 (stated above). This learning outcome will be divided into a set of activities to guide your studies. In this unit you will research the different influences that affect children and young people’s development including their background, health and the environment in which they live.

Unit 3: Understand how to support children and young person’s development

This unit will focus on learning outcome 3 and 4 (stated above). These learning outcomes will be divided into a set of activities to guide your studies. In this unit you will be introduced to the idea of using observations on children and young people to support their development. You will plan activities for children and young people that will support their holistic development and encourage positive behaviour.

Unit 4: Understand the potential effects of transitions on children and young person’s development

This unit will focus on achieving learning outcome 5 (stated above). To guide your studies, this part of the learning outcome will be divided into a set of activities to guide your studies. In this unit you will learn about the range and variety of different transitions that children and young people may experience. You will then reflect and consider the ways that adults can support children and young people when they experience these transitions.

On completion of your course, you will receive the dual award:

At the end of this course successful learners will also receive a Level 2 NCFE Award Certificate of Achievement. Our course has been accredited under our NCFE IIQ Licence and the course measurable learning outcomes have been benchmarked at Level 2 (using Ofqual’s Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF) level descriptors) to allow you to consider the depth of study, difficulty, and level of achievement involved.

This course is currently only available to be studied via the traditional paper-based method.

Study Hours

This is only an approximate figure and is dependant upon how much time you can dedicate to your studies and how well you grasp the learning concepts in the course material. Furthermore, at the end of each lesson there is a question paper that needs to be completed and returned to your tutor. You should allow at least 1 - 2 hours of study to complete each question paper.

The approximate amount of time required to complete the course is: 80 hrs.
