HSE have recently issued new guidance on the provision and maintenance of Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV). They are of the opinion that standards of performance of LEV are often unsatisfactory due to a lack of understanding of the engineering principles and a "tick box" approach to provision and maintenance. It is their intention to increase enforcement effort on this aspect of the COSHH Regulations and field inspectors have been given additional training in the subject.
EEF present an introductory course for engineers and managers which is independently monitored and badged by the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS).
