This course is for international students who would like to improve their English in order to meet the entry requirements for their degree programme. It provides an introduction to academic culture in the UK, focuses on a number of key language points, considers different types of academic assessment, and familiarises our new students with the University.
This course is for international students who would like to improve their English in order to meet the entry requirements for their degree programme. It provides an introduction to academic culture in the UK, focuses on a number of key language points, considers different types of academic assessment, and familiarises our new students with the University. We also visit some local tourist attractions and discuss local culture in the past and present. At the end of the course all students go on a day-trip to another part of Scotland. Students are assisted with finding accommodation, setting up bank accounts, and the other practicalities for living in the capital city of Edinburgh. Entry to degree programmes is conditional on successful completion of the Pre-Sessional course and achieving standard language requirements. By the end of the course students should: Demonstrate English Language equivalent to CEFR B2 in all skills Be able to use a number of common academic skills to communicate information to others effectively Have an understanding of the Scottish education system and the requirements of study within UK Higher Education Institutions Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of intercultural communication, some of the barriers to effective communication, and some methods to overcome these View Full Screen
What's involved We will use a variety of materials to study the kinds of language and academic skills that are relevant to undergraduate and postgraduate students in the UK. You will develop your English Language written, spoken, and listening skills through both formal tuition and conversation with English speakers. You will also develop academic skills, such as note-taking and presentation skills, which are essential in both academic and employment settings. This course is primarily an English course, so we will not be teaching you content relevant to your degree subjects. However, our materials will be drawn from various different disciplines and subject areas and we hope you will find them interesting and challenging.
