Essential to the curriculum for this programme, specialist academic and clinical colleagues have worked collaboratively to develop expert core and clinical modules for the following areas:
- Specialist Adult Nursing (Part Time Only)
- Specialist Mental Health Nursing (Part Time Only)
- Specialist Learning Disability Nursing (Part Time Only)
- Specialist General Practice Nursing (Part Time Only )
- Specialist District Nursing including Community Formulary Prescribing v100 (Full Time or Part Time)
Experienced nursing practitioners will have the opportunity to be able to develop further through higher level clinical decision making, an expert approach to advancements within their specialist area of nursing practice.
Students from a variety of specialist backgrounds are enabled through an integrated theory/practice approach, to enhance and develop their higher level skills which directly affect the delivery of expert specialist nursing care through clinical practice, clinical leadership and service development.
Consideration of the socio-economic and political factors influencing healthcare demands and provision will be facilitated to enhance and transform the students personal performance in the provision of expert, safe and effective nursing care thus reflecting contemporary perspectives.

Duration:
PG Certificate in Accountability and Consultation Skills- One Year over 2 Semesters
PG Diploma Nursing (Specialist) Practice with/without NMC SPQ – Normally two years part-time (or one year full-time for District Nursing students only)
MScNursing (Specialist) Practice with/without NMC SPQ – Normally three to six years part-time
Attendance: Days of attendance differ between modules and delivery mode
Start date: One Intake per year- October 2013-14
Entry and admission criteria
The Course supports a standard and non-standard route of entry. Most notably all potential students must have:
- Effective registration on the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) professional register.
- Competence in the use of the English language to the satisfaction of the University.
- A UK Honours degree with at least second class honours in a nursing field (or equivalent at the discretion of the Programme Leader).
- At least two years clinical experience in nursing in a chosen field of practice, and demonstration of leadership and research skills through Continued Professional Development (CPD) or publication of clinical articles/material. Candidates should also be able to demonstrate that they have the requisite clinical skills and relevant CPD required and therefore be in a position to develop higher level skills.
- Applicants must be able to name two referees, one giving emphasis to academic ability and the second their relevant clinical experience.
- You will be expected to attend an interview with DMU.
You must complete a declaration form and enhanced CRB disclosure application form (if you are overseas you will also need to submit a criminal records certificate from your home country), before starting the course, which need to be cleared in accordance with DMU ’sad mission policy. If English is not your first language an IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent when you start the course is essential. English language tuition, delivered by our British Council accredited Centre for English Language Learning, is available both before and during the course if you need it. Teaching and assessment
The course adopts a range of teaching and learning strategies designed to facilitate the learning of a professional group; aiming to be efficient and motivating in the transfer of theoretical and practical knowledge, and to engage positively in actively negotiating, constructing and evaluating learning. Strategies include;
- Teacher-led sessions
- Student-led seminars and presentations
- Discussions and tutorials
- Independent study
- Focused reflection
- as well as a range of experiential teaching methods
You must complete a total of 180 credits for the MSc or a total of 120 credits for the PG Dip and 60 credits of modules for the PG Cert.
Only 30 credits of modules can be studied per semester in the part time mode, 60 credits (District Nursing students only) can be studied in the full time mode.

- Accountable Practitioner (15 credits) Semester 1
- Using evidence to develop service and advance nursing practice (15 credits) Semester 1
- Physical and psychosocial examination and consultation skills for specialist practice (30 credits) Semester 2
For the PG Diploma the nature and focus of the core modules demonstrate a commitment to give you not only the knowledge and skills to provide effective specialist nursing practice to patients and clients, but the confidence to drive through change at a strategic or operational level within your workplace. The range of optional modules allows you to tailor the course to your professional needs.
PG Dip/MSc Core modules –All modules to be undertaken by all students (NMC recordable)
- Accountable Practitioner (15 credits) - Semester 1 Year 1
- Influencing / innovating and problem solving in clinical practice (15 credits) - Semester 2 Year 2
- Physical and psychosocial examination and consultation skills for specialist practice (30 credits) Semester 2 Year 1
- Using evidence to develop service and advance nursing practice (15 credits): Semester 1 – Year 1
PG Dip/MSc “Expertise” Modules – (NMC recordable) one only to be undertaken by all students:
Semester 1- Year 2
- Developing expertise in adult nursing (30 credits)
- Developing expertise in learning disability nursing (30 credits)
- Developing expertise in mental health nursing (30 credits)
- Developing expertise in general practice nursing (30 credits)
- Developing expertise in District Nursing (30 credits) with v100 Community Formulary prescribing “0” credit Module
PG Dip/MSc “Option/ student choice” modules –one only to be undertaken by all students:
Semester 2 Year 2
- Long term care (15 credits)
- Acute care (15 credits)
- Metal health and psychosocial care (15 credits)
- First contact and urgent care (15 credits)
- Immediate care (15 credits)
- Issues in contemporary health care (15 credits)
- The community agenda (15 credits)
Additional final core module for all MSc students only
- Service Development Project (60 credits)
Academic expertise
A key strength of our team is that they are experienced specialists in clinical areas of practice; familiar with the evidence-based informing specialist nursing practice and a wide range of accompanying issues and debates.
Visiting lecturers will also contribute to the modules to broaden your perspective of specialist nursing regionally and nationally. In addition, many staff members are actively involved in undertaking research within this area of clinical practice.

A postgraduate academic qualification and the NMC recorded qualification Specialist Practitioner in adult, learning disability, mental health, general practice or district nursing will be an essential aspect of your professional portfolio and will support your career progression through the advancement of your own practice in providing high quality patient, family, group and community specialist nursing care in clinical practice.
