Entry and admission criteria

Entry requirements for 2014

  • Normally 260 UCAS Points from at least two A Levels or equivalent
  • Five GCSEs at grade C or above, including Maths and English
  • BTEC requirements: Distinction Merit Merit (DMM) at National Diploma Level.
  • Additional qualifications can contribute towards the points score such as a third A Level or AS Levels
  • International Baccalaureate: 28+ points.

We welcome applications from mature students with non-standard qualifications and recognise all other equivalent and international qualifications.

If English is not your first language, an IELTS score of 6.0 or equivalent when you start the course is essential. English language tuition| is available at DMU both before and during the course if required.

You then have a choice from the following:

Joint Honours degree students will study choose available modules from 50% of one subject and 50% of another.

*As a Joint Honours student you can choose to do your dissertation in Journalism or your other subject.

Work experience and placements

You will be able to participate in a vast range of work experience opportunities, ranging from local newspapers, through to local, regional and national broadcasters and a wide variety of magazines.

You will also have the chance to contribute to the Demon Media stable of multi-media platforms, The Demon newspaper, Demon FM community radio station, Demon TV and The Demon website.

Students regularly participate in exchange programmes to other countries. Recent destinations have included Baltimore, South Carolina and Prague.

Graduate careers

Journalism graduates go on to work for some of the UK’s biggest media companies, including major newspaper groups, PR companies and the wider communications industries. Increasingly our students are finding employment in the digital sector, where their ability to communicate effectively on a variety of platforms gives them a substantial advantage.

Facilities

You will have access to excellent facilities, including five dedicated computer labs. You will also be able to use the University’s creative technologies suite of high-tech radio and TV studios as part of your studies, and as part of your extra-curricular activities with Demon Media.
