The initial two years will share the same modules as Interior Design BA (Hons). This will provide a collective experience for all Interior Design students.

In term two of the third year you will begin to focus on advanced research methods and at the end of the third term a work placement is undertaken. You will also investigate and establish your own specialist area of study.

The final year syllabus provides you with a professional underpinning of advanced cross-media techniques, technologies and materials relevant to interior architecture, upholding principles of sustainable and inclusive design.

Entry and admission criteria

2013

A good portfolio and normally:

  • Art and Design Foundation or
  • 280 points with a minimum of 180 points from 2 full A levels and including grade C in Art and Design (AS/A level) or
  • National Diploma DMM or
  • International Baccalaureate: 30+ Points

Five GCSEs grades A* - C including English Language or Literature at grade C or above.

We also accept the BTEC First Diploma plus two GCSEs including English at grade C or above

Interview and Portfolio

UK applicants with relevant qualifications will be invited to bring their portfolio of work to an open day and interview.

International Students

If English is not your first language an IELTS score of 6.0 or equivalent when you start the course is essential. English Language tuition, delivered by our British Council-accredited Centre for English Language Learning, is available both before and throughout the course if you need it.

Teaching and assessment

Coursework is the main method of learning and assessment, for which you have continuous support from staff and technicians drawn from a range of relevant professional working backgrounds. Lectures, seminars and practical tutorials support the coursework, providing a broad approach to the design process.

Year two

  • Design Pathway choices: Leisure, Living, Retail, Healthcare and Working,
  • Exhibition and Performance
  • Technology in Context
  • Cross Media Techniques

Year three

  • You will develop your own areas of special interest, pursue individually selected projects and enter prestigious and challenging national and international competitions. Advanced professional research and investigation techniques will be explored via a research module. A work placement undertaken during the summer break will assist in informing the initial development of your major personal project, which will be undertaken in detail in year four.

Year four

  • You will submit your research thesis, business study and major design project. These elements will be developed and integrated to form innovative and commercially viable design solutions. Key aspects of study will include the exploration of new technologies and materials, particularly in relation to the principles of sustainability and inclusive design. You will also explore 'Digital Futures' through the use of the latest design software, the modelscope and digital peripherals.

Work experience and placements

At the end of the third year you will undertake a three month work placement. This ideally links your chosen specialist final year project with an industry placement, providing you not only with valuable work experience but an industry link to support your personal project work.

Graduate careers

Our graduates are expected to work in areas such as retail, public spaces, leisure environments, contract interiors and workplaces, including in-house design for companies such as Foster & Partners, Conran Design, Kelly Hoppen, Tesco's Design Think Tank, Blueprint and Haley Sharpe.

Facilities

Dedicated studios and workshops have open access to resource areas also available to architecture students.

Projects are essentially studio-based with specialist areas for computer design including a dedicated Mac-based media studio; digital capture studio with video and modelscope capture, programmable lighting and green screen; electronic imaging and printing.

There are also workshops for specialised processes in wood, metal, glass and plastics. The studios are open-plan and flexible to cater for design studies, presentations, feedback sessions, seminars and tutorials.
