It provides ideal preparation for those interested in going on to study for a PGCE in the primary sector. The course includes a programme of guest lectures and education research seminars which enhance your learning. There is also an active Education Studies Society.

This course is for students who intend to build a career working with young children. While this is most likely to mean employment in primary schools, it can also include nursery and other pre-school and after-school settings.

  • Interest in the course demonstrated with explanation and evidence

Teaching and assessment

Staff are experienced in all stages of schooling, in further and higher education and in this country and abroad. A variety of teaching methods are employed, including:

You are encouraged to be an active learner, discussing issues, engaging in tasks and working collaboratively and independently. Assessment is by coursework, allowing you to fully explore the topics, set either through individual or group research.

Assessment tasks include presentations and micro-teaching sessions, reflective writing and contributions to electronic discussion boards. These will allow you to develop transferable skills relevant to a career working with children, including critical and reflective thinking and communicating ideas to a group.

We have links with many education providers such as various local schools and other learning environments.

As part of your degree, you will be expected to undertake a placement in a local school. Students thoroughly enjoy this experience and find it prepares them very well for PGCE training.

Graduate careers

This course develops skills that are particularly useful for students who intend to build a career working with young children. While this is likely to mean employment in primary schools, it can also include nursery and other pre and after-school settings.

Many of our recent graduates have started their careers in; teaching (PGCE), education practice, nurseries, youth work and educational publishing for example. We also offer a range of postgraduate opportunities, including an Education Studies MA|.
