Focusing on workshops and live performance, this course is primarily practical and hands-on.

You work in specialist facilities and external venues. Successful completion opens up a range of opportunities in the music industry, or progression to further study at university or specialist colleges. Ideally you will already play a musical instrument.

This programme is for students who wish to develop their musical skills, awareness and competence.

You develop performance skills, background knowledge of music and an understanding of the industry. The focus is on the musician as a member of a group rather than as a solo performer, and the aim of the programme is to enhance your chances of employment in the music industry.

It is broad-based and gives you an introduction to the skills and areas of knowledge needed to contemplate a professional career.

Areas of study include: performance, music technology, listening skills, the music industry, live sound, recording techniques, music theory, history and context of popular music, and 20th century music.

This course is 100% coursework which means you need to be well organised! Guest speakers, workshops, trips and visits are also embedded into this course. Our new partnership with the SAE Institute means you could work on live projects within creative media production.

You gain a complete range of skills that aid you in a career in music and/or onto the next step towards higher education.

Our specialist staff are practitioners in the music industry and have wide international connections. They will teach you to perform, to react and play for your audience, to devise music for a variety of contexts, and to embrace the history of this very important area of work.

Applicants for a Level 3 programme will normally have at least 4 GCSEs at grade C or above (including some subjects related to the proposed area of study), and/or a completed Level 2 award, and the willingness to study for an additional Level 2 qualification in English and/or maths.

If you are interested in a Level 3 programme and have alternative qualifications you would like us to consider, please contact us with your details. Applicants will be invited to attend an interview and complete an internal assessment. All students will have their literacy and numeracy needs supported within the programme.

You may be able to progress on to a related higher education course, such as a 2-year degree programme offered by the SAE Institute, a new partner of ours.

The SAE Institute delivers creative media courses in sound/audio engineering, music production, digital film-making, web development, 3D/interactive animation and games programming. The degree option for successful completion of this programme is the SAE BA/BSc in Audio Production.

Our Roland Academy status ensures that a good range of professional equipment is available to students on the course.
