About This Course:You will study towards an up-to-date qualification covering many of the skills that are in demand for a range of different careers in the software development/programming sector of the computer industry. These include developing skills in C#, VB.NET, Java, Object Oriented Design, Object Oriented Programming, SQL Programming and Project Management.
The 2012 Technology Insights Report from e-skills UK stated “The technical skills most often called for by employers were: SQL, .NET (VB and C#) and Java”, it also stated “Through to 2020 Software Professionals show the highest forecast employment growth of all IT & Telecoms occupations“. This is evidence that this course will help prepare you for either employment or progression to university in what is continuing to be a growth area of Computing.
What You Need:- Two Higher and three Intermediate 2 courses (including a combination of the following; Physics, Mathematics, Computing or Information Systems), OR
- A national qualification at SCQF Level 6 in Computing: Software Development, or a related subject OR
- Other equivalent qualifications or experience, OR
- For those returning to education, life skills and experience in the workplace may allow entry subject to availability.

Year 1 - Developing Software: Introduction; Systems Development: Introduction; Computer Systems Fundamentals; Computing: Introduction to Project Management; Information Technology: Information Systems and Services; Troubleshooting Computer Problems; Software Development: Developing Small Standalone Applications; Professionalism and Ethics in Computing; Databases: Introduction; Team Working in Computing; Human Computer Interaction; Software Development: Programming Foundations; Mobile Technology; Computing: Software Development; HNC Computing: Graded Unit 1 (Exam).
Year 2 - Software Development: Object Oriented Programming; Software Development: Data Structures; Relational Database Management Systems; Systems Development: Object Oriented Analysis and Design; Software Development: Developing Websites for Multiplatform Use; Systems Development: User Centred Design; HND Computing: Software Development: Graded Unit 2 (Project); Software Development: Data Structures; Self-Describing Data (XML); SQL: Introduction
Embedded within this award is an Oracle vendor qualification which may make you significantly more employable.
After The Course:Career - Software development, web design/development and information systems development.
Continuing study - Second or third year of degree courses for example Year 3 of BSc (Hons) Computing at Glasgow Caledonian University; Year 3 of BSc (Hons) Internet Systems Development at Glasgow Caledonian University; Year 3 of BSc (Hons) Web Systems Development at Glasgow Caledonian University; Year 3 of BSc (Hons) Computer Games Development at Glasgow Caledonian University.
How Long:Two years, starting in August. You can also leave after one year with a HNC.
