About This Course:There is a need for creative and technical professionals please to provide skills for the TV, film, advertising, animation and games industries. This hands-on course develops the skills you will need to advance your ambitions in the animation field as a 3D digital developer. The general aims of this programme are to develop skills in vocationally relevant software and hardware, develop current employment skills and expertise, and provide knowledge and understanding of the role of computer technology within TV, filmmaking, games industry and animation subject areas.
You will develop knowledge and skills in researching, planning, developing, and evaluating ideas. The programme will also help you develop an awareness of the creative process and visual language.
A range of project based activities are incorporated throughout the 2 year programme to help you develop these skills. There is an opportunity at the end of Year 1 and Year 2 to undertake an individual project to allow you to further develop your own skills.
The course covers industry standard software primarily focussing on Autodesk 3Ds Max but including Mudbox, Adobe Photoshop and After Effects. Through the use of these software applications you will study, character modelling, character animation, special FX and environmental modelling.
What You Need:- Two appropriate Highers and three Intermediate 2 courses (including at least one from Computing, Information Systems, Graphic Communications and/or the Art and Design area) OR
- Two Higher and three Standard Grades at Credit level or above, OR
- A national qualification at SCQF Level 5 or 6 in a related subject such as Digital Media Computing, Computer Arts and Animation OR
- Other equivalent qualifications or experience.

What You Study:The subjects you’ll study include: 3D Modelling: An Introduction, Character Modelling, Cameras, Lighting and Special Effects, Environmental Modelling, Drawing Skills, Movement Studies, Surfaces and Textures, Showreel / Portfolio Creation, Sound Editing, Video Editing, and Compositing.
After The Course:Career
There may be employment opportunities in new media, interactive media and converging media technology.
Continuing study
Students who complete their HND may progress to: BSc (Hons) Computer Animation (with options) at the University of the West of Scotland or BA (Hons) 3D Computing Animation at Glasgow Caledonian University. BDes (Hons) Animation at University of Dundee. Other national options may also be available.
How Long:Two years, starting in August. You can also leave after one year with a Higher National Certificate.
