This practically focused qualification will develop practical skills in sports massage, health and fitness testing, basic taping and strapping, the application of hot and cold techniques and emergency first aid, which together will provide learners with a holistic profile to prevent and manage injuries in sport and active leisure.
Learners will also develop knowledge and understanding of anatomy and physiology, nutrition, plus sports injuries and their rehabilitation to support the practical skills they acquire. Customer care and employment awareness are also embedded within this qualification to prepare learners for employment in sport and active leisure.
Alongside the VTCT Diploma we also offer the L2 Certificate in Fitness Instruction (Gym-based) which compliments the Diploma well and increasing employability.
Course Code: A0095 Minimum Age: 16 Course Length: One year Course Schedule: Days can vary due to timetabling, but generally 3 days a week Entry Requirements:Four GCSEs at Grade C or above (preferably including a Human Science, Sports Studies/PE).
Other equivalent qualifications of an appropriate level (if unsure, please ask).
Core Skills:Topics included in the programme are:
- Field-based fitness testing for sport and exercise.
- Customer service in the sport and active leisure industry.
- Injuries in sport.
- Understanding employment rights and responsibilities.
- Understanding the active leisure and learning sector.
- Emergency first aid skills.
- Management of illness and injury in activities.
- Functional anatomy, physiology and nutrition for sports therapies.
- Applying sports massage methods to non-pathological tissue.
- Applying taping and strapping to support and limit specific movement in sport and active leisure.
- Applying hot and cold techniques in sport and active leisure.
Additional qualifications:
- Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym-based)
- L2 Functional Skills in English and/or Maths (or option to resit GCSE English and/or Maths if not already achieved at grade C or above)
You will be required to attend some external events with the Extreme Sports Therapy Unit and provide Sports Massage in the field to competitors. This will gain you valuable experience in the field and set you aside from others studying a simliar qualification around the country.
Additional home based study will be required to complete the course (approximately 8-10 hours per week).
Assessment:Modules will draw on different assessment strategies which will include:
- Portfolio based written assignments
- Practical assessments/observations
- Presentations (individual/group)
- End of module tests
- Peer group assessments
- Foundation Degree in Sport, Health and Exercise
- Personal Training qualification
- Level 4 Sport Massage qualification
On successful completion of the course you will be able to consider work in a fitness centre, health farm, cruise liner or sports centre. You might also consider starting your own business.
