LEVEL 1 CERTIFICATE IN BEAUTY THERAPY

The course is a mixture of theory and practical workshop sessions. When a learner is ready for assessment, the salons will be open to the public and students will perform the treatments on paying clients creating a realistic working environment. Assessment of essential knowledge and practical skills will be done through written test papers, oral questions and practical observation. All learners will be required to compile a portfolio of evidence in order to complete the course. The Level 1 Certificate in Beauty Therapy consists of the following mandatory units: Ensure responsibilities for actions to reduce risks to Health and Safety in the salon, Prepare and maintain salon treatment areas, Provide basic manicure, Provide basic pedicure, Skin care, Basic make-up application and Salon reception duties. Learners can progress on to Level 2 Certificate in Nail Treatments.

All students will, alongside their chosen course of study, also undertake: Welsh Baccalaureate at Foundation level, Essential Skills Wales in Communication, I.T. and Numeracy at level 1. This gives greater breadth to students' learning, providing the skills and personal qualities that employer and higher education institutions are looking for. To achieve this qualification student's work towards a core certificate, including essential skills and work experience, alongside their chosen course of study. The course also includes Foundation Level Welsh Bacc.

How you will gain the qualification

The course is a mixture of theory and practical workshop sessions. Theory is delivered and assessed through tasks and external set examinations. Paying clients will offer a realistic working environment where theory and knowledge can be put into practice, and the practical elements of the course be assessed through observation and oral questioning. Through this learners will build up a portfolio of evidence of the work that they have completed.

What qualifications you need

Entry requirements for this course is 4 GCSEs at E or above. Learners are required to attend an interview and skill assessment prior to course entry.

Where to next

Within the academic year the learners will be given the opportunity to progress their skills from level 1 to level 2, this will include manicure and pedicure skills, reception duties, and health and safety in the salon.
