Apprenticeship Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People's Workforce
General information
This programme is suitable for learners who have no prior child care experience and also for existing staff members who wish to achieve formal qualifications and update their Literacy and Numeracy skills.
All learners must be in paid employment (min. 30 hours per week) and have a written contract of employment to confirm this.
The learner will spend time in the college as well as gaining practical experience in the workplace. In the workplace the learner is expected to work along side experienced staff to gain skills of care. The employer pays the learner a salary. The learner will attend college on a day- release basis or have the option of distance learning.

Course content
- College workshops will take place one day a week or be completed by distance learning
- Regular assessments and reviews in the workplace
Learners will work towards the childcare framework consisting of
- Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People's workforce
- ICT
- 12 hour paediatric first aid certificate
- Level 2 award in Employers Rights and Responsibilities
- CWDC Induction Standards
- Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate
Teaching and assessment
Learners are required to build a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate their skills, understanding and knowledge of the subject. Training is provided through workshop sessions, tutorials and classroom teaching.
The college workshops support the skills practiced in the place of work, and it is expected that the workplace mentor and college tutor, together, help the learner to develop as a child care practitioner.
Entry requirements
4 GCSEs grade D or above or equivalent Level 1 qualification. You must be in paid employment for a minimum of 30 hours a week in a childcare environment and have a written contract of employment to confirm this. You must be able to attend College one day a week and have CRB clearance. Selection is by interview and assessment of suitability to study at Level 2.
Progression
Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3 Diploma or NVQ Level 3 Diploma for the Children and Young People's Workforce.
