This award deals with the basic skills required by people hoping to start a career in Welding but is also appropriate for those wishing to improve their welding skills for work or hobby interests.
Course content
Following a period of training to enable the candidates to become competent in the chosen discipline, five practical tests are completed. An example of typical course tests would be: Arc Welding
- 3 parallel beads on plate
- Lap Fillet Joint in the horizontal/vertical
- Tee Fillet Joint in the flat position
- Tee Fillet Joint in the horizontal/vertical position
- Open Outside Corner in the flat position
- Health & Safety Knowledge Questions
- Process Knowledge Questions

Entry Requirements
By interview, although there are no formal entry requirements. Enthusiasm and a determination to succeed will be an advantage.
Delivery & Assessment methods
Candidate’s competence is assessed by satisfactorily completing five mandatory practical tests. Candidates must complete ALL of the tests in the welding discipline being undertaken. Candidates must also complete Underpinning Knowledge tests.
Progression
A different welding mode at Level 1. The same or a different welding mode at Level 2. NVQ Level 2 Fabrication and Welding Engineering
