This practical based course is delivered at the Botanical Gardens Birmingham and will help you gain the knowledge and skills you need to work in a variety of plant environments from maintaining turf as a groundskeeper, to caring for plants as a gardener. You may have an interest in designing gardens and parks as a landscape artist. You may be just starting out, or taking a break from a job to learn another skill and receive valuable training

Course content

You complete a selection of units including some of the following: • Understand the basic principles of soil science • Setting out from a plan • Understand the basic principles of plant science • Establish and maintain plants outdoors • Participate in protected horticultural plant production • Identification and control of plant problems in the land-based sector • Introduction to land-based machinery operations • Introduction to plant nomenclature, terminology and identification • Introduction to plant selection • Participate in propagation techniques • Maintain winter and summer sports turf surfaces

Entry Requirements

4 GCSE's at grade D or above including Maths and English or level 1 Diploma in Practical Horticulture Skills. A keen interest in gardening and the outdoors are essential.

Progression

Level 3 Diploma in Horticulture Skills or equivalent employment in land-based industry
