Foundation Degree in Computing

Who is this course for? This is an exciting oportunity to gain a formal qualification in computing. The Foundation Degree in Computing, with option pathways in Forensic Computing, Mobile Technology and Web Design, is designed to develop both academic skills and the skills required for employment in the computer industry. What qualifications or experience do I need ? Minimum entry requirements for students under 21 is 100 UCAS tariff points . Mature students (over 21 years) will need to demonstrate they have adequate skills in Maths and English to enable thems to complete the programme, and some relevant background experience in Computing. What will I study ? The course has a common first year. All students will study: Introduction to programming Underpinning Knowledge and Skills for Computing Introduction to Databases Computer Networks Operating systems In addition, students will be able to take introductory modules in each of the pathways: Forensic Computing Introduction to Mobile Technology Web Development In the second year, students can continue with a general computing degree or specialise in one of the specific pathways. Second year mandatory modules include: Software Design Systems Analysis Human Computer Interaction Advanced Databases In the second year of the programme, all students must undertake an internship of 2 days a week for 4 months, during which they complete a project and write a report on the work they have done. How will I be assessed ? Assessment will be through: Practical coursework Written assignments Project work Extended Project Time Constrained Assignments What qualifications could I achieve ? On successful completion of this course, students will achieve a Foundation Degree in Computing validated by Middlesex University What can the course lead to ? Students may progress to employment. Students with an excellent grade profile may progress to Year 3 of a Computer Science degree at Middlesex University. There may be opportunities for some students to progress to Year 2 of more specialist computing degrees. How do I join the course ? Students will be required to purchase text books for this course. Further Information We aim to run this course over 3 days per week full time, or 1 afternoon and evening part-time.
