Extended Engineering Degree Initial Year

Who is this course for? This course is designed for those who are over 18 years of age and who may not have the appropriate qualifications for direct entry to a BEng or BSc Degree programme at Herts University or older students who have followed a vocational route in engineering and now wish to return to education to seek a change in career path through an engineering degree route. The course leads on to a number of progression routes in general engineering, Aerospace, Automotive, Mechanical, electrical and electronic, Digital communications, Digital systems and computer, Motor sport, Aerospace with Pilot studies, computing Networking, etc. What qualifications or experience do I need ? An Extended Engineering course is available for students who do not meet the standard criteria for entry to the degree courses. The entry requirement for extended engineering is 120 UCAS points PLUS 5 GCSEs including English, mathematics and a science at grade C or above. A minimum IELTS score of 6.0, TOEFL 550, is required for those for whom English is not their first language. Students unsure of their tariff points can contact the college/university for guidance. Please ensure you have an accurate list of all qualifications dates, boards, etc together with copies of the relevant certificates. What will I study ? This course will cover the following topics over two semesters of 15 teaching weeks: Semester 1 * Mathematics 1 * Engineering Science * Computers and Engineering Applications * Engineering Studies and Skills Semester 2 * Mathematics 2 * Mechanical Science * Electrical Science and Electronics * Engineering Project Planned private learning sessions are also built into the course timetable to allow students to access both college and university facilities to assist with the completion of assignments, etc. The course is designed to provide all students with a wide base of knowledge to continue in their chosen career areas, as all engineering disciplines require a general knowledge of a range of engineering and mathematical areas as well as a knowledge of the use of computers. How will I be assessed ? Assessment will be through: College and University Coursework which will include written assignments timed tests and practical tasks. In addition there will also be end of semester examinations in Mechanical and Electrical Science as well as Mathematics. Final marks for all modules are determined by aggregating all coursework and examination marks. What qualifications could I achieve ? On successful completion of this course, students will achieve the appropriate standard for progression onto BEng or BSc Degree Programmes at Herts University. What can the course lead to ? Students who successfully complete this course may progress onto the first year of a BEng Engineering or BSc Technology Degree Programme at Herts University. How do I join the course ? Applications are usually through UCAS, however, any applications to the College will be forwarded to the University Admission Tutor for processing. Will I need an interview ? Possibly; depending on your qualifications and experience. You may also be asked to take a diagnostic test during either enrolment or induction to check your suitability for the course/identify any additional support/learning requirements. Are there any extra costs for equipment/materials ? Students will be required to purchase text books for each subject area and also a university specified calculator for this course. Further Information This is a one year course, where students will spend up to three days at College and one day at the University. You will have a course tutor and a link tutor assigned to deal with both college and university requirements and provide support and guidance. In addition you will also have access to student services at both the college and the university. After enrolment you will be able to use the College facilities on all sites as well as the facilities at the university. There is a wide variety of accommodation available in the areas around both the college and the university which are both by the A1 (10 miles) 15 minutes. The college and the university can also be easily reached by train from central London. Parking is available at both the university and the college.
