Description

Introduction

This course includes an introduction to four approaches to the study of the mind and behaviour. There will be the opportunity to explore ten pivotal studies in order to develop an appreciation of how human beings behave together, develop and perceive the world around them. Throughout the course students will gain an understanding and appreciation of the different methods used by psychologists both in the past and today. This presentation of the AS qualification is designed for adult learners.

What Will I Learn

Students will explore the fields of behaviourism, psychodynamic theory, biological and cognitive psychology. In addition the core studies will introduce developmental and social psychologies. There will be an introduction to research methods and the interpretation of statistics.

How Will I Be Assessed?

There will be two written papers: one in January and the second in May/June. There is no coursework requirement for this course.

Additional Information

Please note that this is not an introduction to counselling. It is suitable for those people who are interested in how science explains our behaviour. It will also be useful for understanding how science is reported (and distorted in the media).

Progression

Successful students may wish to continue to A2 level at the end of which they will gain a level 3 qualification in psychology.

Career Opportunities

Psychology is an interesting subject in its own right. Students join a variety of careers which include clinical psychology, child and educational psychology, forensics, management and teaching.
