Maritime history covers all aspects of humankind's relationship with the sea and links to broader aspects of economic, political, cultural and social history. Its many facets include: shipping and shipbuilding, both naval and mercantile; trade and commerce; fishing; sea power; labour; ports and coastal communities; exploration; and maritime policy. The programme focuses on maritime history since the late 18th century, and places an emphasis on developing student skills in historical research.

It is also relevant to those with a first degree in history or a related discipline who want to develop maritime history expertise.
