Module delivery dates

Attendance for this module is divided into two 3 day study blocks which next run in Lancaster 18 - 20 March 2013 and 29 April - 01 May 2013.

For the 2013/4 academic year, the study blocks are scheduled to run in Lancaster 17 - 19 March and 28 - 30 April 2014.

This module enables students to:

  • Develop interpretative skills in cross-sectional anatomy related to the abdominal, pelvic, peripheral and cerebral vasculature
  • Recognise pathological abnormalities demonstrated in the above mentioned areas
  • Establish and adhere to examination protocols
  • Evaluate the role of ultrasound in relation to other diagnostic imaging techniques.

This module can be drawn into the MSc Medical Imaging Ultrasound by Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) and into associated Medical Imaging programmes as appropriate.

In addition to the academic entry requirements students will need to have appropriate clinical experience and access to the supervision and support of an experienced clinical practitioner who will act as their mentor for the duration of the course.


Modules

Module content for HMSU7050 includes:

  • Regional normal cross-sectional arterial and venous vascular anatomy in adult and paediatric subjects, including normal and pathological appearances and variations in waveforms observed in each of the arteries and veins
  • Haemodynamics of blood flow with reference to interpreting Doppler waveforms
  • Arterial and venous vascular investigations using B mode grey scale imaging, spectral and colour flow Doppler modes
  • Comparative investigations using other diagnostic tools
  • Alternative forms of assessment including ABPI
  • Assessment and quantification the arterial and venous vasculature of head, neck, viscera, pelvis and limbs for abnormality and disease
  • Changes in mesenteric blood flow in normal and diseased subjects
  • Portal and systemic blood flow patterns; description and interpretation of ultrasound appearances and measurements in normal and pathological conditions related to the above arterial and venous vasculature
  • Comparison of ultrasound images of the above structures with those produced by other imaging methods
  • Assessment and monitoring of surgical interventions - grafts, stents, transplants, endarterectomy.
Course summary

The module enables students to:

  • Develop interpretative skills in the ultrasound appearances peripheral and abdominal vascular structures
  • Evaluate the haemodynamics of blood flow in relation to vascular ultrasound
  • Recognise pathological abnormalities and normal variants in the above mentioned areas
  • Establish and adhere to examination protocols
  • Evaluate the role of ultrasound in relation to other diagnostic imaging techniques
  • Study ultrasound procedures which are currently being developed to replace conventional radiographic examinations.

The assessment for this module includes:

  • An unseen written examination (40% of the overall module mark)
  • A case study project of 3000 words (60% of the overall module mark)
  • Completion of summative clinical assessments of competence.
