Lancaster - 17 January, 14 February, 07 March 2014; 10:00 - 16:00 hours

You will need to attend one of the induction days prior to commencing your first module; these are running in Lancaster on 18 or 19 September 2013 (you only need to attend one date), 08 January 2014 and 26 March 2014 and in Carlisle on 20 September 2013, 07 January 2014 and 25 March 2014. If you have studied at the University of Cumbria in the past two years the requirement to attend the induction day may be waived.

This module can be taken on a stand-alone basis or as part of the UAD and BSc (Hons) Management and Leadership in Health and Social Care award. It can also be incorporated into an appropriate Practice Development programme.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the principles and practices of budgeting and resource management and how this impacts upon and links to service user activity
  2. Critically reflect upon your role in relation to finance and resources
  3. Critically reflect upon how 'payments by results/tariffs' impacts on your organisation/department and demonstrate a critical understanding of the service user information requirements linked to this
  4. Demonstrate a critical understanding of business planning for quality improvement in relation to your role and service
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of costings and critically apply this to the cost benefits analysis process.

Course summary

The indicative module content includes links between financial resources and service users; importance of accurate record keeping in relation to finance/resource management; interpreting costings - fixed, variable, direct, indirect and marginal; budgeting and managing a budget; payment by results/tariffs and links to service user information requirement; cost benefit analysis.
